about

Milperra Drain Widening

J Group was contracted by Canterbury Bankstown Council to deliver the civil infrastructure works for Stage Eleven Part Two of the Milperra Drain Masterplan. This involved the widening of a 570-meter section of the drain to enhance water flow and reduce flooding risks. The project scope included the removal of existing concrete culverts and a timber bridge, along with extensive earthworks and the installation of stormwater drainage systems featuring headwall and scour protection.

The project adhered to Australian Standards and incorporated robust environmental management measures, such as handling acid sulfate soils (ASS) and installing toe protection and erosion control features to stabilize the channel. Traffic management and environmental controls were strictly enforced to minimise disruptions to the surrounding golf course and residential areas.

THE SCOPE

• Widening a 570-meter section of the Milperra Drain to improve water flow and reduce flooding risks.

• Demolition and removal of existing infrastructure, including two concrete culverts and a timber bridge.

• Bulk Earthworks, involving excavation, cut and fill across the site, and disposal of topsoil and sediment.

• Stormwater Drainage installation, including the construction of headwalls and scour protection for a DN375 stormwater pipe.

• Environmental Management measures such as handling and treating acid sulfate soils (ASS) and installing toe protection to stabilise the channel.

• Construction of a rock retaining wall and installation of erosion control blankets for steep batter stabilisation.

• Adjustments to water supply systems for the nearby golf course.

Achieving significant improvements in the drainage capacity

The Milperra Drain Masterplan - Stage Eleven Part Two was completed to the full satisfaction of Canterbury Bankstown Council, achieving significant improvements in the drainage capacity of the Georges River catchment. The widened drain section and newly installed stormwater infrastructure have enhanced water flow and provide increased flood protection for the surrounding areas. Key environmental management measures were implemented, including the handling of acid sulfate soils and stabilising the channel banks with toe protection and erosion control features. The project has contributed to the long-term flood mitigation strategy for the region, ensuring the protection of local infrastructure and enhancing community resilience against future flooding events.
