about

The excavation of existing topsoil and installation of new pavement

J Group was appointed by the City of Canada Bay Council to execute the Norman Street Carpark project, a key component of the Majors Bay Recreation Precinct upgrade. The project involved the excavation of existing topsoil and installation of new pavement, alongside the construction of driveways, footpaths, and traffic islands to enhance parking capacity and improve accessibility. Due to the presence of dioxin-contaminated soil, stringent environmental management protocols were enforced, with a project hygienist overseeing the handling of hazardous materials. The project also included robust traffic management measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians and local traffic, as well as tree protection strategies to preserve the surrounding landscape during construction. These works were carefully coordinated to meet the council’s safety and environmental standards while delivering the project efficiently.

THE SCOPE

• Excavation of the existing topsoil, which was identified as general solid waste, and preparation of the site for new construction.

• Pavement construction, including the formation of new parking spaces, driveways, and traffic islands to enhance parking capacity and accessibility.

• Installation of footpaths to improve pedestrian access around the car park.

• Implementation of traffic management measures to ensure minimal disruption to local traffic and pedestrians during the construction process.

• Environmental management measures to handle the site’s dioxin-contaminated soil, including monitoring and control under the supervision of a project hygienist.
